Chapter 8: The Decision
I return to my desk, the broadcast still fresh in my mind. Sorting through the piles that are mentally designated "New,” "Maybe," and "No". I finally find the one with the Santa Clara postmark. How long ago did this arrive? A week, maybe two?
I now view it in a different light, not as a letter, but as a possible piece of evidence requiring careful scrutiny. Now holding it at the edges, I begin turning it about and looking for any other details evident on the envelope. "Mr. R. Saxby" is scrawled across the front in an untidy hand, but without the address to the house. Just "Mr. R. Saxby, Aspen, Colorado". Is General Delivery still an option with the U.S. Postal Service? I will have to ask when I pick up my mail next.
I set the letter down and pulled my leather desk chair closer, sitting more upright and formally. My fingers drum against the desk as Iconsider this simple detail. Was this becoming a case, or just my mind grasping for something to break the monotony?
After a moment, I grab a fresh legal pad and jot down the first notation: "Ask the Snowmass Post Master about General Delivery".
